Expand File Library and storage management
TL;DR
File Library is now available for Free and Go users to reuse uploaded documents. New storage limits are introduced across all plans, ranging from 500 MB for Free users to 100 GB for Pro users.
What changed
On May 14 2026 OpenAI expanded the File Library to Free and Go plans. Users on these tiers can now save uploaded documents and reuse them across chats instead of reuploading each time.
Storage caps were also set for every plan. Free accounts receive 500 MB, Go accounts receive 4 GB, Plus and Business accounts receive 20 GB, and Pro accounts receive 100 GB. Storage covers uploads plus files ChatGPT itself creates such as documents and images.
Why it matters
Free and Go users gain a basic persistent workspace for documents without paying for a higher tier. This reduces friction for solo builders who keep reference material in one place and query it repeatedly.
The change pressures competitors that still tie file reuse to paid seats. It also signals OpenAI is willing to give lighter users modest long-term storage rather than forcing constant cleanup.
How to use it
Open ChatGPT on web, go to Settings then Storage to view current usage and delete files. Browse saved files through the Library view or pull recent ones directly from the composer.
The feature works on web, iOS, and Android. Files from Temporary Chats stay excluded from the Library. Delete items manually when you approach your plan limit.
Watch for
Confirm the bet if reuse rates rise and users report fewer re-uploads in daily workflows. The bet breaks if storage limits trigger frequent deletions or if file search stays slower than external tools. Expect OpenAI to add folder organization or search filters next.
Who this matters for
- Vibe Builders: Use the 4GB Go tier storage to maintain persistent prompt libraries and brand assets across chats.
- Basic Users: Access the File Library to reuse documents without re-uploading, staying within the 500MB free limit.
Harsh’s take
OpenAI is finally addressing the friction of ephemeral chat sessions by turning ChatGPT into a persistent document hub for all tiers. This move targets the middle ground between casual chat and full scale RAG systems. By offering 4GB to 100GB of storage, they are effectively anchoring users into their ecosystem, making it harder to switch to Claude or Gemini if your entire reference library lives in OpenAI's cloud.
The storage caps are generous enough for text but will hit walls quickly for power users generating high resolution images or large datasets. This is a strategic play to increase daily active usage by reducing the 'cold start' problem of every new chat. Operators should treat this as a lightweight knowledge management layer, but keep a close eye on the lack of folder organization, which remains a major bottleneck for professional workflows.
