Codex mobile access via ChatGPT
TL;DR
You can now use Codex from the ChatGPT mobile app by connecting it to a Mac running the Codex app. This allows access to your projects, files, credentials, plugins, and configuration directly from your phone.
## What changed OpenAI added mobile access to Codex through the ChatGPT app on iOS and Android. Users connect the phone app to a Mac that runs the local Codex app. The link exposes projects, files, credentials, plugins, and configuration without moving data to the cloud.
The feature rolled out on May 18, 2026. It requires the Codex desktop app to stay running on the Mac and an active connection between the two devices.
## Why it matters Solo builders gain a way to review or trigger Codex work while away from the desk. The setup still depends on a always-on Mac, so it does not remove the need for local hardware.
This move pressures pure-cloud coding tools by keeping the heavy work on the user's machine. It bets that many Vibe Builders prefer to keep credentials and large codebases local while accepting a phone as a thin control surface.
## How to use it Install the latest Codex app on a Mac and leave it running. Open the ChatGPT mobile app, go to the Codex section, and select the option to connect a desktop instance. Enter the pairing code shown on the Mac.
Once linked, the phone shows the same workspace list and can start or review sessions. The connection stays active only while the Mac app remains open and reachable on the local network or via the configured remote tunnel.
## Watch for Stable pairing that survives network changes would confirm the bet. Frequent drops or the need to keep the Mac awake would break daily use. Expect OpenAI to add background wake or iOS Shortcuts support next if adoption stays high.
Harsh’s take
This feature lets a Vibe Builder check Codex output on the couch, yet it still demands a powered Mac that never sleeps. The real trade-off is convenience versus reliability: phone access works only when the desktop app stays connected and the machine stays online.
Most solo operators will hit friction the first time they leave the house or the laptop lid closes. The setup adds another device that must be managed rather than removing a step.
Test the pairing on your current Mac tonight. If it drops after thirty minutes, keep the phone as a read-only viewer and do actual work at the desk instead.
