NotebookLM and Gemini merge: Notebooks sync across both apps

Google merged the NotebookLM and Gemini app notebook experiences. Notebooks created in either app now sync to the other: same sources, same chats, same memory. The move is Google's clearest signal yet that NotebookLM and Gemini are converging into one workflow.

Gemini added "Notebooks" as a first-class feature inside the Gemini app. The new experience mirrors NotebookLM's notebook model: each notebook groups chats and source files together as a personal knowledge base.
Crucially, notebooks sync across both apps. Create a notebook in NotebookLM, it appears in Gemini. Start a notebook in Gemini, NotebookLM picks it up.
What moves across
Three things now share state between the two apps:
- Sources. PDFs, Google Docs, Drive files, web pages, and the other source types NotebookLM already supports.
- Chats. Every conversation inside a notebook is preserved and accessible from either app.
- Memory. The notebook's evolving context (what Claude or Gemini has learned about your project) persists across both interfaces.
Why Google did this
NotebookLM has been Google's most unambiguously good AI product, known especially for its audio overviews and source-grounded answers. But it lived as a separate product from Gemini, creating a fragmented experience: power users kept notebooks for research, and Gemini for everything else.
The merge unifies the two. Gemini gets NotebookLM's source-grounded discipline; NotebookLM gets Gemini's broader integration surface (Android, Chrome, Workspace).
For Workspace customers
Expanded NotebookLM capabilities rolled out in parallel for Google Workspace for Education Plus and Teaching and Learning add-on customers. Higher feature limits across the board at no additional cost. Enterprise Workspace admins should check the recent Workspace Updates blog for the exact limit changes.
What remains separate
NotebookLM as a standalone app is not going away. The two apps still have distinct surfaces, and each optimises for different use cases (research-focused vs generalist). The sync is about shared data, not a forced merge.
Who this matters for

- Basic User: NotebookLM's audio overviews, summaries, and source-grounded chat now show up inside Gemini too. No account setup; if you use Gemini, notebooks are just another tab.
- Developer: Workspace customers get higher feature limits at no extra cost. Build real team knowledge bases in NotebookLM without hitting paid-tier gates quickly.
What to watch next
This is Google finally acknowledging that NotebookLM was the better product and using that equity to improve Gemini, instead of forcing NotebookLM to play second fiddle. The direction of travel here matters: Google is moving NotebookLM's discipline (source-grounded answers, persistent context) into Gemini, not the other way around.
For anyone using NotebookLM seriously, the sync is the feature. You stop having to pick "research in NotebookLM" or "everything else in Gemini." A notebook in NotebookLM becomes queryable from Gemini on your phone, from Chrome's sidebar, from anywhere Gemini lives.
The Workspace limit increases are the sneaky win for enterprise users. NotebookLM's free-tier limits have been tight enough to push serious users to paid tiers quickly. Higher Workspace limits lower the cost of building real knowledge bases inside NotebookLM for teams.
One concern: Google's track record with product mergers is mixed. Hangouts to Meet was ugly. Allo to Messages was ugly. If the sync turns into a forced migration down the line, expect friction. For now the two apps coexist cleanly.
