Limitations:

• •Local setup is not beginner-friendly — running AnythingLLM on your own machine requires Node.js 22+, WSL2 on Windows, and manual model configuration. Technical reviewers report 45+ minutes of setup even on macOS. Non-technical business owners should expect significantly more friction.
• •Cloud version cannot run local AI models — the hosted cloud plan has no GPU, so it does not ship with a built-in AI model. You connect it to an external provider (OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.) and pay those API costs on top of your AnythingLLM subscription.
• •Cloud version blocks custom agents and MCP integrations — due to security restrictions, the hosted cloud does not support custom AI agents or Model Context Protocol tools. Those features require the self-hosted desktop version.
